Hi, I’m Stuart, 39, I live in the UK.
My story probably echoes that of many others in the Herd. I had let my life slip, poor eating habits, no exercise of any substance, always an excuse. In February 2016 I had a free health check at work and the results were a real wake up call, my activity rating was negligible, I had a metabolic age of 50 and I was overweight.
That weekend was Valentines and so whilst I went out with my wife for a meal I took the car, we got a taxi home and I ran the 3 miles or so back to where I had parked the following morning to collect the car, the last section of the run was uphill and by the time I reached the car I was ready to throw up.
I was determined to stick at it though and with some careful planning I became more disciplined in what I ate and how I exercised, I rediscovered running, I can now run that hill with ease and I have never looked back.
Since then I have lost over 3 stone/20kg, my body fat is now similar to that expected of a professional footballer (soccer player), my metabolic age is 24 and I am taking on my biggest running challenge to date in the York Marathon on Sunday 8th October.
This challenge is also an opportunity for me to give something back and to show that I have really taken my second chance and am living life to the full.
In February 2012 I was diagnosed with testicular cancer, I was lucky to find the lump early and this year after 5 years ongoing surveillance I was discharged by my oncologist and given the all clear, I am therefore running the marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support who do an amazing job.
Don’t get me wrong I still like to eat cake and drink beer but it is done in moderation and in the knowledge that I am burning off plenty of calories by exercising, I currently run around 35 miles per week. Another reason for improving my health was to inspire my two young children and to set a positive example for them, I want to be around when they have their own kids and to be fit enough to enjoy being a grandparent.
